Final Notes for Honors Civ:
Here are my notes for the Salon tomorrow. As of right now the theme I’ve noticed within all forms of knowledge (folk, oral, written, print) centers around the idea that authority is what determines how valuable that knowledge is. Especially in Islam, public speakers, medicine and so forth.
Unit One—Folk Knowledge
- Self-directed learning: Scripture Reading made me realize that not all Folk knowledge is beneficial (Dark Works blog). Also scripture reading
- Others' blogging: So many things I never would have considered folk knowledge: kissing, rubix cube, braiding, so much fun to learn about.
- Collaborative learning: As I taught a dance class, I learned a lot about the technique myself. (Rhumba dance post) Learning about cooking chicken was a collaborative effort. My friend’s brother showed us techniques such as sautéing and such. Reading others’ comments and having actual
Conversations (Dane in my “Dark Works” post)
Mandala insight: direction, focus, angles, circles, lines all combined into one
South Mouse stage of life infancy: summer, clueless, season is green
West Bear Stage: Red, West, angst, adolescence, horrible and wonderful time of life, intense frustration, everything is big, all that high school drama. The West is glamorized by Hollywood. Bigger is better. Flair is fun.
North Bison Stage: Winter, White, must survive with the bison, middle age, you are the caregiver sacrifice, weathering the storm. Longest tedious phase, because you have to take care of children. Respectable cultures idolize this stage.
East Eagle stage: spring, yellow. Spiritual, more of a connection to the West (see the axis) Wisdom
South Return to Mouse Stage: Extreme old age, been through everything and are now a mouse with wings.
This life brings you from innocence to Knowledge. Look at the axis and the natural connections to different stages. Also, the more knowledge you gain the more you value collaborative learning. Selfishness is always childish. Think about a child (lives in his own world), teenager/freshman at BYU( I must get good grades), parents (work with their spouse to learn how to raise children,),grandparents (all they want to do is talk with their family) We choose to grow up.
- Projects / Activities: Oral discussion final, you always learn more working with others. Video blog post: I went in with one idea, discussed it with others and then I changed my way of thinking.
Unit Two—Oral Knowledge
- Self-Directed Learning: Went to go interview my Islam professor, felt more professional, value in what I learned was higher than in comparison to listening to a lecture. Watching TED Talks, the value of the public speaker (Obama Cairo Speech, using PBUH). Really came to understand the value of oral traditions (Adhan, memorizing the Koran, Hadith, Muhammad). The Greek philosopher Gorgias noted that mastering rhetoric (pathos, logos, ethos) gave one considerable power over others (liken pathos is what caused Helen to be so easily carried off by Paris)
- Other’s blog posts: Danes post on mneumonics (small chunks of things Triads) Summer’s Question/answer format. Shows that the more pointed and specific questions you ask, the more valuable information you get out of it. Contrast with Chemistry study groups (just tells us everything)
- Collaborative learning: Legislative(future) Judicial (past), Ceremonial (present) Why do we gather for General conference? Its so we can discuss what insights we gain together.
- Projects/Activities: King Ben’s speech. General conference.
Unit Three—Written Knowledge
- Self Directed learning: Visiting Rare Collections (Steinbeck letters), valuing calligraphy, islam and medicine, knowledge didn’t spread beyond the Islamic culture
- Other’s blog posts: Marc Vien Medical terminology. Need to define something before you can talk about it. Alex’s post on writing left-handed
- Collaborative learning: Multiple scribes to translate the Bible,
- Projects/ Activities: Rossetta Stone failing at hieroglyphics
Unit Four—Print Knowledge
- Self-Directed learning: Final paper, annotative bibliography. Valuing the printed source rather than the digital.
- Other’s blog posts: King James Bible, Summer’s post on the Book Store.
- Collaborative Learning: Working with another peer about my final paper topic. She had some good insight about woodcuts that I incorporated into my own paper.
- Projects/Activities: Library field trip, the Book of Mormon no written in verses. Looks like the Odyssey, more poetic form. Easy to get lost though.
